Tiger Beer 'Beast' TVC - Music Production

Below is a description and analysis of the compositional process I took in creating the music for this TV commercial.  Tiger Beer 'Beast' TVC - Music Composed and Produced by Jon Brooks. This was a demo and part of a presentation I prepared for an interview and position I took at WASP Studios, Malaysia. I worked on this advert in 2004. Wowsers! Ten years ago! Please see below for more info.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
- Because there was no voice over, it was evident that the key to the soundtrack was to provide the correct emotional messages by accentuating the on-screen text and images for the audience.
- There's a lot of information for the audience to absorb.
- I felt the music should be rhythmically driven and embody a punchy and solid sound that compliments the pacing whilst securing continuity.
- Overall, my interpretation of the commercial was that Tiger Beer will fulfil your every need; giving you street-cred and success. All positive aspects of life.

COMPOSITIONAL PROCESS AND ANALYSIS:
- First of all, I imported the commercial into Cubase (Music Sequencing Package) to sync. the picture to a click track so I could establish an appropriate tempo. I settled on 155 BPM (beats per minute). This made numerous hit points accessible due to the high tempo.
- One of the main components of the score is the use of syncopation, which helps build up a sense of adventure and excitement.
- Another major feature of the music is the use of a memorable motif, of which reiterates throughout. The seven note motif is expressed on the pianoforte, constructed of staccato quavers. Following this motif, you can hear a tonal, yet percussive syncopated sound which goes through various permutations as the advertisement develops.
- The soundtrack has a punchy drive that constantly moves forward, stressing that "if you consume this beer"... "you will be fulfilled". Hard sell huh?
- When the beer cans are submerged in water, the timbre of the music shifts to reflect this, e.g. with filtering and EQ (equalisation) to the lower frequencies. The music then reverts back to being "in your face". To conclude, the text, visuals and pacing sum up all the positive aspects; the soundtrack compliments and reinforces this.

Missing Malaysia Airlines - Flight MH370 - MAS

Our hopes and prayers are with MH370 and their loved ones.  This music was written for a Malaysia Airlines Merdeka 2005 television commercial (TVC) for Merdeka Day commemorating the independence of Malaysia from British rule.

FACTS:
- Total Passengers: 239
- Aircraft: Boeing 777-200ER
- Departed Kuala Lumpur: 12:41am on 8th March 2014
- Scheduled to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am
- Air traffic controllers lost track of the jetliner at 1:30am between Malaysia and Vietnam
- All Boeing 777 commercial jets have black box recorders
- There are no signs of wreckage
- Apparently there were two Iranian illegals on board using fake passports
- Five passengers didn't get on the plane even though they checked in
- Two-thirds of the passengers on flight MH370 were Chinese

Was it terrorism, a mechanical failure or something else?

"Independence" - I composed, orchestrated and programmed this orchestral music in Logic Pro.

One of the tracks from Alan Sylvestri's Forrest Gump soundtrack was given as a reference track - the clients loved it so much they asked me to compose something as close as possible without infringing copyright.

Merdeka: "The effort for independence was spearheaded by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who led a delegation of ministers and political leaders of Malaya in negotiations with the British in London for Merdeka, or independence along with the first president of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) Tun Dato Sir Tan Cheng Lock and fifth President of Malaysian Indian Congress Tun V.T. Sambanthan. Once it became increasingly clear that the Communist threat posed during the Malayan Emergency was petering out, agreement was reached on February 8, 1956, for Malaya to gain independence from the British Empire. However, for a number of logistical and administrative reasons, it was decided that the official proclamation of independence would only be made the next year, on August 31, 1957, at Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium), in Kuala Lumpur.

On the night of August 30, 1957, crowds gathered at the Royal Selangor Club Padang in Kuala Lumpur to witness the handover of power from the British. Prime Minister-designate Tunku Abdul Rahman arrived at 11:58 pm and joined members of the Alliance Party's youth divisions in observing two minutes of darkness. On the stroke of midnight, the lights were switched back on, and the Union Flag in the square was lowered. The new Flag of Malaya was raised as the national anthem Negaraku was played. This was followed by seven chants of 'Merdeka' by the crowd. Tunku Abdul Rahman gave a speech hailing the ceremony as "greatest moment in the life of the Malayan people".

On the morning of Saturday, August 31, 1957, the festivities moved to the newly-completed Merdeka Stadium. More than 20,000 people witnessed the ceremony, which began at 9:30 am. Those in attendance included rulers of the Malay states, foreign dignitaries, members of the federal cabinet and citizens. The Queen's representative, the Duke of Gloucester presented Tunku Abdul Rahman with the instrument of independence. Tunku then proceeded to read the Proclamation of Independence, which culminated in the chanting of 'Merdeka' seven times with the crowd joining in. The ceremony continued with the raising of the National Flag of Malaya accompanied by the national anthem being played and a 21-gun salute, followed by an azan call and a thanksgiving prayer in honor of this great occasion.

The formation of the Federation of Malaysia was then announced on September 16, 1963 as Malaysia Day. The nationwide Independence Day celebration is still held on August 31, the original independence date of Malaya, while Malaysia Day was a public holiday only in East Malaysia. However, this has caused some minor discontent among East Malaysians in particular since it has been argued that celebrating the national day on August 31 is too Malaya-centric. In 2009, it was decided that starting 2010, Malaysia Day would be a nationwide public holiday in addition to Hari Merdeka on August 31."

Jon Brookes, the drummer from British indie rock band The Charatans has died.

I was surprised to receive messages thinking people thought I had died today.  However, it is a different Jon Brookes.  My thoughts and love go out to his friends and family at this difficult time.  RIP Jon.

LONDON – Jon Brookes, drummer with British indie rock band The Charlatans, has died. He was 44 and had been treated for brain cancer.  The band said on its website that Brooks died in a hospital Tuesday.

Lead singer Tim Burgess tweeted that the band was “torn apart” by Brookes’ death.
Brookes was a founding member of the band, which drew on funk, rock and psychedelia and came to be associated with the early 1990s “Madchester” scene. The Charlatans’ multiple British hits include “The Only One I Know” and “Can’t Get Out of Bed.”

Brookes was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010 after collapsing onstage during a concert in Philadelphia. He had been working on new material with The Charlatans this summer.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Valentine's Day Video Message - I Love You

A Valentine's Day Music Video Message to send to your loved one on 14th February 2013. Send this youtube video message to your husband, wife, partner, boyfriend or girlfriend to show them how much you love and care for them. Some people assume that if they love another person, the other person is simply going to know this. That is not always the case. Your loved ones need to be told and shown that you love them to know for certain that you really do.

Valentine's Day is celebrated on 14th February. It is a festival of romantic love and many people give cards, letters, flowers or presents to their spouse or partner. They may also arrange a romantic meal in a restaurant or night in a hotel. Common symbols of Valentine's Day are hearts, red roses and Cupid.

Many people celebrate their love for their partner by sending cards or letters, giving gifts or flowers and arranging meals in restaurants or romantic nights in hotels. People who would like to have a romantic relationship with somebody may use the occasion to make this known, often anonymously. Valentine's cards are often decorated with images of hearts, red roses or Cupid. Common Valentine's Day gifts are flowers chocolates, candy, lingerie and champagne or sparkling wine. However, some people use the occasion to present lavish gifts, such as jewelry. Many restaurants and hotels have special offers at this time. These can include romantic meals or weekend breaks.

The most common Valentine's Day symbols are the heart, particularly in reds and pinks, and pictures or models of Cupid. Cupid is usually portrayed as a small winged figure with a bow and arrow. In mythology, he uses his arrow to strike the hearts of people. People who have fallen in love are sometimes said to be 'struck by Cupid's arrow. Other symbols of Valentine's Day are couples in loving embraces and the gifts of flowers, chocolate, red roses and lingerie that couples often give each other.

Tell your loved ones that you love them often. So many people regret when their loved ones pass away and they cannot remember hearing or saying the words, "I love you," in recent years. Prevent this deep regret from happening in your relationships by specifically saying, "I love you," to the people you love.

Spend time with the people you love. Many people claim to love their friends, spouses or children but do not carve out time to spend with them. If you do not spend time with someone, you are communicating that they are not important to you. Loving someone means investing time in them.

Make your loved ones a priority in your life. If you love someone, then you will not shove that person to the bottom of your priority list. You will not cancel plans at the last minute to accommodate other priorities in your life or, worse, refuse to make plans because other parts of your life are always more important.

Invest in what someone you love cares about. For example, even if you have never had any interest in construction equipment, a parent who loves her son will take the time to learn about construction equipment because the child cares about it. If you want to show people how much you love them, then value what they value.

Make yourself vulnerable to the people you love. Part of loving another person involves opening up your heart and revealing who you really are. To show someone that you love him, you must be honest and open about who you are.

Accept your loved ones as they are. When you love someone, you do not try to change her. Instead, appreciate her for the unique and precious person she is.

Make sacrifices. Showing someone that you love him often comes with sacrifice. The needs of the person you love are more important than your wants. For example, a child's need to play outside with you overrides your desire to take a nap. In some cases, making painful decisions that are in the best interest of the one you love is the best way to show your love for him.

Commit to the people you love. Even when you do not feel loving toward someone, choose to stay invested. The feelings of love might ebb and flow, but your commitment is the glue that holds the relationship together and shows how much you love someone.

ORCHESTRA (As cited on Wikipedia):
An orchestra is a large instrumental ensemble that contains sections of string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. The term orchestra derives from the Greek ορχήστρα, the name for the area in front of an ancient Greek stage reserved for the Greek chorus. The orchestra grew by accretion throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during the course of the 20th century.

A smaller-sized orchestra for this time period (of about fifty players or fewer) is called a chamber orchestra. A full-size orchestra (about 100 players) may sometimes be called a "symphony orchestra" or "philharmonic orchestra"; these modifiers do not necessarily indicate any strict difference in either the instrumental constitution or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different ensembles based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra).

A symphony orchestra will usually have over eighty musicians on its roster, in some cases over a hundred, but the actual number of musicians employed in a particular performance may vary according to the work being played and the size of the venue. A leading chamber orchestra might employ as many as fifty musicians; some are much smaller than that. Orchestras can also be found in schools. The term concert orchestra may sometimes be used (e.g., BBC Concert Orchestra; RTÉ Concert Orchestra)—no distinction is made on size of orchestra by use of this term, although their use is generally distinguished as for live concert. As such they are commonly chamber orchestras.

The typical symphony orchestra consists of four proportionate groups of similar musical instruments called the woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings, and also the fifth proportionate group of similar musical instruments like the rhythm section in modern times. The orchestra, depending on the size, contains almost all of the standard instruments in each group. In the history of the orchestra, its instrumentation has been expanded over time, often agreed to have been standardized by the classical period and Beethoven's influence on the classical model.

The so-called "standard complement" of double winds and brass in the orchestra from the first half of the 19th century is generally attributed to the forces called for by Ludwig van Beethoven. The exceptions to this are his Symphony No. 4, Violin Concerto, and Piano Concerto No. 4, which each specify a single flute. The composer's instrumentation almost always included paired flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets. Beethoven carefully calculated the expansion of this particular timbral "palette" in Symphonies 3, 5, 6, and 9 for an innovative effect. The third horn in the "Eroica" Symphony arrives to provide not only some harmonic flexibility, but also the effect of "choral" brass in the Trio. Piccolo, contrabassoon, and trombones add to the triumphal finale of his Symphony No. 5. A piccolo and a pair of trombones help deliver storm and sunshine in the Sixth. The Ninth asks for a second pair of horns, for reasons similar to the "Eroica" (four horns has since become standard); Beethoven's use of piccolo, contrabassoon, trombones, and untuned percussion—plus chorus and vocal soloists—in his finale, are his earliest suggestion that the timbral boundaries of "symphony" might be expanded for good. But for several decades after his departure, symphonic instrumentation was faithful to Beethoven's well-established model, with few exceptions.

Apart from the core orchestral complement, various other instruments are called for occasionally. These include the classical guitar, heckelphone, flugelhorn, cornet, harpsichord, and organ. Saxophones, for example, appear in a limited range of 19th and 20th century scores. While appearing only as featured solo instruments in some works, for example Maurice Ravel's orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, the saxophone is included in other works, such as Ravel's Boléro, Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suites 1 and 2, Vaughan Williams Symphony No.6 and Symphony No.9 and William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, and many other works as a member of the orchestral ensemble. The euphonium is featured in a few late Romantic and 20th century works, usually playing parts marked "tenor tuba", including Gustav Holst's The Planets, and Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben.

Thank you for listening!

(As cited on Wikipedia)
The phoenix, or phenix is a mythical sacred fire bird that can be found in the mythologies of the Arabian, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, Indians and (according to Sanchuniathon) Phoenicians/Canaanites.

It is described as a bird with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends. It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (literally "sun-city" in Greek). It is said that the bird's cry is that of a beautiful song. The Phoenix's ability to be reborn from its own ashes implies that it is immortal, though in some stories the new Phoenix is merely the offspring of the older one. In very few stories they are able to change into people.

Music Composed by: Jon Brooks

LYRICS:

Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
A storm's a brewin'
Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
Here comes the rain

Watch out! Watch out!
It's windy whirly
(What if it never stops again?)

We can use flowers
For umbrellas

Or dig a hole where we can hide

We can just eat until it's over!!

But it seems like there's no end in sight

Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
A storm's a brewin'
Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
Look at the sky

Watch out! Watch out!
I hear the thunder
(We better find a place to hide!)

What do we do?
Where can we run to?
Is this the storm that never ends?

Let's hope it's not!
Let's stick together
Whether the storm
'Cos we're best buddies

Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
La la la la
Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
La la la la

Uh Oh, Uh Oh!
