Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) - Ask Me a Question - Jon Brooks Composer (September/October 2018)

Thank you to The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) for featuring me in their music journal.
(September/October 2018)

Here's a link to the ISM's website

QUESTIONS
Tell us a little about yourself
I compose and produce custom music and library tracks for film, TV and advertising. I also run my own recording studio based in Stockport working with local and international artists. I studied music at Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge) followed by a Masters degree in Composition for Film and TV at Kingston University (London). After my studies I relocated to Malaysia for six years for an in-house composing position before returning to the UK in 2011. I play the piano and french horn and have previously performed alongside Richard Clayderman, for the Queen during her Jubilee Tour and at the Vatican, Rome.
Who (or what has most influenced you and your career)
Whilst composing my portfolio for GCSE music a friend said my music sounded like film scores. That’s the moment the passion hit and i realised what i wanted to do. I couldn’t stop listening to soundtracks and began analysing the emotional response and functional marriage of music to picture. Ultimately, film composers have influenced my musical output and career the most.
What would you say is your greatest achievement to date?
I’m proud to have worked with some amazing creatives and written music for well known brands and clients such as Walt Disney, Coca Cola, Oxford University Press, Clive Farrington (of When In Rome), Sony, Hats on Sticks Pictures, Cadburys, AstraZeneca and NescafĂ© to name a few.
Who is your all-time favourite artist and why?
I’m torn between Jerry Goldsmith and Hans Zimmer and felt I couldn’t answer without mentioning them both. After hearing the film score in ‘Backdraft’ I fell in love with Hans Zimmer’s work. His scores are incredibly expressive and dramatic. Hans’ execution of combining acoustic instruments with electronica is phenomenal. Not long after, I discovered (the now late) Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith’s musical language was extremely versatile, emotionally charged and thematic.
What was the last CD/music download that you purchased?
A cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence’ by the American band Disturbed. The original is beautiful, but this powerful version takes it to another level emotionally.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue developing as a composer/producer and produce more film and TV scores. I’d also love to be writing more for video game soundtracks.
Finally, what is your ISM membership to you?
My ISM membership has provided invaluable information, webinars and legal advice.

Logic Pro X (Apple) - My Preferred DAW for Music and Audio Production

Logic Pro X (Apple)
My Preferred DAW for Music and Audio Production

Logic Pro X is my preferred digital audio workstation for scoring feature films, TV commercials, animation series, corporate videos, library music and various other media productions. I'm often asked which software I use to compose and produce music. It's powerful, sophisticated, a pleasure to work with and fantastic for synchronising music to visual content; I'm always creating precise hit points to work with specific scenes.

Over the years I've also acquired a large number of third party sample libraries to compliment the software. However, Logic Pro X is a complete professional package and if you don't wish to add extra samples or plugins that's fine. Garageband is the entry level app and is available with Macs and iOS devices. If you're looking for more power and capabilities then Logic Pro X is a necessity.

The audio and music production suite offers a tremendous amount of functions alongside a ton of high quality virtual instruments, effects, samples and apple loops. The recent addition of Flex Pitch for controlling and manipulating pitch is on par with all the other pitch tuning plugins like AutoTune for example.

Logic Pro X isn't available for iPhones® or iPads® but the Logic Pro Remote app is a capable companion for controlling various functions remotely if required.

Download Logic Pro X Templates here: https://logicpro-templates.sellfy.store

Key Features:

  • Edit and record audio and MIDI
  • Out of tune audio can be fixed or the melody changed by using Flex Pitch
  • Flex Time enables users to adapt the duration and tempo of a recording
  • Notate anything from full orchestral scores, lead sheets or notation for solo piano
  • Includes a massive sound library featuring drums, orchestral instrumentals, keyboards, synthesisers, guitars, basses, ethnic world instruments and Apple loops
  • Compatible with third-party AU (Audio Unit) plugins and effects
  • And loads more...

Minimum System Requirements

  1. OSX 10.12 or later
  2. 1280 x 768 resolution display (or higher)
  3. 4 GB RAM
  4. 64-bit Audio Units plug-ins
  5. 6 GB hard disk space for a minimum install
  6. (63 GB disk space for a full sound/sample library installation)

Cinematic, Dramatic and Epic Orchestral Music with Eastern and Asian Inf...

A dramatic, epic, dark and mysterious cinematic music track with western orchestral instrumentation combined with Eastern and Asian elements. It’s the perfect sonic bridge between Eastern and Western cultures fused into a grand soundscape. Featuring metallic sounds, layers of synthesizers, drums and percussion, brass and strings, it incorporates a huge build up to a powerful climax. With a haunting vocal hook and epic percussion that keeps the pace up, your heart will be racing. This thematic symphonic music projects a sense of scorching heat in the desert, exotic travel and packs a punch whilst steadily building to an immense and exciting crescendo. The soaring melody and pumping rhythm give the track real momentum combined with a sense of intrigue and wonder. Ideal uses include advertising, trailers, film, tv and any other media requiring dramatic impact.

Dunhill cigarettes are a luxury brand of cigarettes made by the British American Tobacco company. They are usually priced above the average for cigarettes in the region where they are sold. They are exported mostly throughout Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, South Africa, South Korea, Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia (manufactured by Bentoel Group), New Zealand and Australia but can also be found on the Internet and in duty-free and smoke shops in the United States and Canada.

(As cited on Wikipedia)

Dunhill Light cigarettes are packaged in a predominantly white packet, with a bevelled edged square of red in the centre. Dunhill has decided to phase out this pack and have introduced marketing information that the blue box described below is the same cigarette although carbon monoxide levels and nicotine levels are altered.

Dunhill International cigarettes come in a red packet and are one of the most expensive and luxurious cigarette brands available; they and the Dunhill King size beveled packs (which come in Full flavor, light and menthol light) are available only in the United States through specialty tobacconist shops.

Dunhill (minus the "International") are a more expensive version produced by BAT, and are sold in European (including Russian), Asian-Pacific, and Canadian markets. Dunhill cigarettes were favored by gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson and English rock musician John Lennon.

Dunhill International cigarettes American distribution is owned and operated by Reynolds American, who are most notably famous for their Camel brand.

Some of my musical influences include: Jerry Goldsmith, Gustav Mahler, Danny Elfman, R. Strauss, John Williams, James Newton-Howard, Wagner, Debussy, Patrick Doyle, Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, Bill Conti, Sibelius, Elgar, Klaus Badelt, Michael Giacchino, Aerosmith, Elliot Goldenthal, Harry Gregson-Williams, James Horner, Def Leppard, Michael Kamen, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer, Christopher Young, Gabriel Yared, Bon Jovi, Debbie Wiseman, Shirley Walker, Brian Tyler, Alan Silvestri, Howard Shore, The Beach Boys, Marc Shaiman, Wishbone Ash, Graeme Revell, John Powell, Mozart, Rachel Portman, Michael Nyman...... and many more!!!

(As cited on Wikipedia)
Destiny or fate is a predetermined course of events. It may be conceived as a predetermined future, whether in general or of an individual. It is a concept based on the belief that there is a fixed natural order to the cosmos.

Although the words are used interchangeably in many cases, fate and destiny can be distinguished. Traditional usage defines fate as a power or agency that predetermines and orders the course of events. Fate defines events as ordered or "inevitable" and unavoidable. Classical and European mythology features three goddesses dispensing fate, known as Moirai in Greek mythology, as Parcae in Roman mythology, and as Norns in Norse mythology. They determine the events of the world through the mystic spinning of threads that represent individual human fates.

Destiny is used with regard to the finality of events as they have worked themselves out; and that same sense of Destination, projected into the future to become the flow of events as they will work themselves out. In other words, fate relates to events of the future and present of an individual and in cases in literature unalterable, whereas destiny relates to the probable future. Fate implies no choice, but with destiny the entity is participating in achieving an outcome that is directly related to itself. Participation happens willfully.

In psychology, memory is the processes by which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved. Encoding allows information that is from the outside world to reach our senses in the forms of chemical and physical stimuli. In this first stage we must change the information so that we may put the memory into the encoding process. Storage is the second memory stage or process. This entails that we maintain information over periods of time. Finally the third process is retrieval. This is the retrieval of information that we have stored. We must locate it and return it to our consciousness. Some retrieval attempts may be effortless due to the type of information.

From an information processing perspective there are three main stages in the formation and retrieval of memory:

- Encoding or registration (receiving, processing and combining of received information)
- Storage (creation of a permanent record of the encoded information)
- Retrieval, recall or recollection (calling back the stored information in response to some cue for use in a process or activity)
