I composed the music cue for this Unilever advert - Lady's Choice Peanut butter. (As cited by Unilever): "Made from carefully selected peanuts and roasted to perfection – has no cholesterol, is filled with protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids (good for the heart) and contains vitamins and minerals".

Below is a description and analysis of the compositional process I took in creating the music for this TV commercial. Tiger Beer 'Beast' TVC - Music Composed and Produced by Jon Brooks. This was a demo and part of a presentation I prepared for an interview and position I took at WASP Studios, Malaysia. I worked on this advert in 2004. Wowsers! Ten years ago! Please see below for more info.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
- Because there was no voice over, it was evident that the key to the soundtrack was to provide the correct emotional messages by accentuating the on-screen text and images for the audience.
- There's a lot of information for the audience to absorb.
- I felt the music should be rhythmically driven and embody a punchy and solid sound that compliments the pacing whilst securing continuity.
- Overall, my interpretation of the commercial was that Tiger Beer will fulfil your every need; giving you street-cred and success. All positive aspects of life.
COMPOSITIONAL PROCESS AND ANALYSIS:
- First of all, I imported the commercial into Cubase (Music Sequencing Package) to sync. the picture to a click track so I could establish an appropriate tempo. I settled on 155 BPM (beats per minute). This made numerous hit points accessible due to the high tempo.
- One of the main components of the score is the use of syncopation, which helps build up a sense of adventure and excitement.
- Another major feature of the music is the use of a memorable motif, of which reiterates throughout. The seven note motif is expressed on the pianoforte, constructed of staccato quavers. Following this motif, you can hear a tonal, yet percussive syncopated sound which goes through various permutations as the advertisement develops.
- The soundtrack has a punchy drive that constantly moves forward, stressing that "if you consume this beer"... "you will be fulfilled". Hard sell huh?
- When the beer cans are submerged in water, the timbre of the music shifts to reflect this, e.g. with filtering and EQ (equalisation) to the lower frequencies. The music then reverts back to being "in your face". To conclude, the text, visuals and pacing sum up all the positive aspects; the soundtrack compliments and reinforces this.
Exciting news!! The trailer for 'SAM, The InventorBot' is here... Woohooo!!! 'Tribe Audio' (www.tribeaudio.com) commissioned me to compose and produce the soundtrack for the trailer. This was an awesome project to work on - loved every second of it!

"The Kangaroo and the Wombat" I composed the music for this animated series. 'Shapes' is a children's series of 39 x 7 minute episodes (Season 1), in which simple animal tales are brought to life using animated shapes. It feature's the writer of 'Backyardigans' and 'Little Einstein' and the voice talent of Joe Murray.
The series' quirky animation, simple lines and bold colours appeal visually to children, while the light-hearted stories keep them entertained. Kids love animals, so these stories, filled with talking animals both cunning and foolish, will capture their hearts! At seven minutes each, these mini-episodes are bite-sized enough to engage their attention fully.
The music throughout the series plays a supportive role. The style is generally fun and whimsical with hints of drama!
Famous fables from around the world are brought to life using characters created from different shapes! This pre-school TV series retells beloved children's stories from Aesop's Fables to Australian Aborigines folktales using colourful shapes that cleverly form animals like rabbits, cats and even fish!
Created by the multi-award-winning animation studio Peach Blossom Media, each episode of this charming series entertains and teaches pre-schoolers about universal values of love, respect, courage and kindness.
Each story is presented by the narrator, Badger, who also comes on at the end to draw a conclusion from the story he has just told. Badger chooses fables from all over the world, both ancient and modern. Just because a fable originated in Ancient Greece or among the Aborigines in Australia, it doesn't mean that the lesson it teaches isn't relevant to kids everywhere.
The uniqueness of the series lies in its design concept. Badger has at his disposal thousands of different shapes of all colours and sizes. He uses them to form the various characters and locations needed to tell each fable. Sometimes the shapes are unruly and don't do what they are supposed to. At other times one of them falls out of place or turns up late, thereby disrupting the story. Badger interacts with the shapes, creating plenty of funny moments for kids to enjoy!

The album 'Independence' contains ten original tracks and they all exhibit a superb fusion of styles; blending classical orchestral elements with a modern day electronic sound... as an addition to this, 'Independence' also boasts a hint of the 80's too! It's already receiving extensive radio play and TMR Records have recently negotiated and licensed two of the tracks to GAP (Mexico) for use on their latest compilation CDs. Some of the album's tracks could be classed as a cross between the 'Pet Shop Boys', David Guetta, Scott Walker and Robert Miles. The songs are suitably original and highly emotive.
LYRICS:
VERSE 1:
Brave boy, you are the one and only unashamed boy
It's easy to forget you're so afraid boy
Afraid of overlooking, like a strange toy
The clown that someone gave you for your birthday
CHORUS:
Now it's time to release your love
Yes it's time to release your love
VERSE 2:
Sometimes, a rich imagination takes you nowhere
You allow for conversations to meander
Your every word though poison, some believe you
The strangest thing of all is I don't know you
CHORUS:
Now it's time to release your love
Yes it's time to release your love
INSTRUMENTAL
END CHANT:
For the sake of the truth
And the making of you
Will you walk with me now
And remember who's who
We can take all our lives
The light blinding yet giving
Leading the way to what's right
And forgiving
CHORUS:
Now it's time to release your love
Yes it's time to release your love
Now it's time to release your love
