Press Release | Ghostly War - Joanne Staples

Sales Director and Film Composer couple write  Coronavirus song anthem during lockdown.
(Manchester, United Kingdom)
22nd April 2020

Joanne Staples, Sales Director and mother of two has written and produced an uplifting, emotional and empowering song alongside her Film Composer partner, Jon Brooks, during the Coronavirus lockdown.
Together for 18 months, being on lockdown was the first opportunity they had experienced to be creative together due to busy schedules. Initially, the track started as a fun project to ward off watching TV but the concept quickly evolved into much more… a musical message of hope and reassurance for everyone during this difficult time. When they posted it on YouTube and Facebook, their aim was to inspire friends and family; but it is now growing in popularity, and gaining radio play in the USA for audiences around the world.

'Showdown' is track 10 on Clive Farrington's solo album 'INDEPENDENCE'.

Like many hunters for perfection, Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann have carried their craft through to today and indeed, they are still writing fresh, contemporary pop songs. Their hit single 'The Promise' is widely received as one of the best pop songs of the 80's. The song was featured in the hit movie Napoleon Dynamite in 2004  Andrew and Clive are still very much a song-writing partnership and joined forces with classically trained film composer, Jon Brooks.

Jon has a Master's degree in Composition for Film and Television and has worked as a professional composer since 2002. For six years he worked as an In-house Composer/Audio Consultant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, working on scores for films, television, radio, television commercials, musicals and animation series. He returned to the UK and set up his own recording studio which is based in South Manchester. His clients and credits include: Coca Cola, Cadburys, Disney, Malaysia Airlines, Mars, Pixar, Pepsi, Saatchi & Saatchi and Sony...

Jon plays mainly the Piano and French Horn. At 12, he won first prize in a piano competition where he appeared on stage alongside Richard Clayderman. He has performed at a variety of venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Kuala Lumpur's Twin Towers and at the Vatican, Rome. He also had the privilege of performing for the Queen during her Jubilee Tour.

Group influences are primarily Scott Walker, John Williams, Jaques Brel, Mahler, Righteous Brothers, Hans Zimmer, Dvořák, Francis Lai, Tchaikovsky, Coldplay, Green Gartside (Scritti Politti), John Barry, Bon Jovi and The Blue Nile.

Uncle Bill - Funny Music Animation

"Uncle Bill" - Quirky and Catchy Song
Music and Lyrics: Jon Brooks
Animation: Octavio Oseguera
Editing: Jon Brooks

Both Ted and Uncle Bill live in Antarctica. Ted is a cheeky, cocky little penguin who repeatedly tells Uncle Bill his name is NOT Fred.  Uncle Bill has always called his nephew "Fred" - but that is not his name!  Uncle Bill is a big, old, perverted, smelly, scruffy, simple minded yet wealthy and extroverted penguin. Ted is unable to get the message through to him and is frustrated by his Uncle's ignorance.  Hope you enjoy this quirky and catchy song!  Let me know in the comment section below what you think.

Official Website www.jonbrooks.co.uk

Some of my musical influences include: Hans Zimmer, Gustav Mahler, John Williams, Bon Jovi, Patrick Doyle, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, Wishbone Ash, James Horner, Brian Tyler, James Newton-Howard.

PENGUINS
A penguin is a flightless marine bird, and an iconic figure in the avian world, despite the fact that their range is restricted to the Southern Hemisphere. Many children learn to recognize the distinctive black and white coloration of the penguin at an early age, and the birds are popular attractions in zoos and aquatic parks all over the world. Many adults find the birds endearing because of their waddling walk and engaging faces, and the birds are also used to brand a number of products including the popular Penguin Classics books and the Linux operating system.

All penguins are in the family Spheniscidae, and the exact number of penguin species is a subject of dispute, with estimates ranging from 15-19 distinct species. The largest variety of penguin is the Antarctic Emperor Penguin, which stands an impressive four feet (120 centimeters) when fully grown, and the smallest is the Little Blue Penguin of Australia and New Zealand, topping out at 14 inches (35 centimeters). In all cases, penguins retain essentially the same coloration, with dark backs and pale bellies.

The coloration of the penguin assists it in hunting seafood such as fish and crustaceans, because the dark back camouflages the penguin from predators above while the white belly makes them less visible to prey from below. Penguins also have wings which resemble flippers, having evolved to value swimming over the ability to fly, and they have strong webbed feet to kick with while they swim. In addition, penguins have oily, stiff feathers to waterproof their bodies while swimming in cold water.

Penguins feed exclusively in the ocean, surviving on stored fat while on land incubating eggs. Most penguins share incubation duties, keeping the egg on top of the feet and crouching over it, insulating the egg with their bellies. One penguin will travel to the ocean to eat while the other incubates, and then the couple will switch off. Once the penguin chick hatches, both parents participate in the feeding and care until it becomes a juvenile and is able to fend for itself.

Oddly enough, the word "penguin" is Welsh, despite the fact that penguins have never been known to live in Wales. It is a compound of pen for head and for white, and it was originally used to refer to the great auk, a now extinct flightless bird which was native to the Northern Hemisphere. When explorers saw penguins during their Southern adventures, they associated them with the great auk, and began to refer to them as penguins as well. Although the great auk is gone due to human depredations, the penguin lives on.

Computer animation or CGI animation is the process used for generating animated images by using computer graphics. The more general term computer-generated imagery encompasses both static scenes and dynamic images, while computer animation only refers to moving images.

Modern computer animation usually uses 3D computer graphics, although 2D computer graphics are still used for stylistic, low bandwidth, and faster real-time renderings. Sometimes the target of the animation is the computer itself, but sometimes the target is another medium, such as film.

Animation Competition 2013 - Animator Opportunity

Dear Animators,

This is an exciting animation commission opportunity and competition for any animators that would like to produce the visuals for a fun, catchy song and humorous 2 minute music video.  If you know anyone that might be interested please share this with them.

ANIMATION STYLE:
There are very few limitations to the look and style of the animation; i believe in leaving some creative space for the animator to "do their thing". For example, this could end up being Hand Drawn, CG, 2D, 3D, Traditional, Flash, or Stop-Motion. It doesn't have to be complex either - as long as the visuals express the mood, lyrics, setting and characters of the song. You might draw on influences from Crazy Frog, The Duck Song, Wallace and Gromit, Pingu, Walt Disney, Tom and Jerry, Happy Feet or The Family Guy etc. Above all, this is supposed to be a fun project to work on and a nice way to experiment with creativity.

CHARACTERS, SETTING and THEME:
There are two main characters. (Separate audio tracks for each character are provided if you are able to lip sync.). Both characters are Penguins located in Antarctica. Fred is a small cheeky and cocky penguin whilst Uncle Bill is a big, old, perverted, smelly, scruffy, simple minded yet wealthy and extroverted penguin.  (The lyrics will also give you a feel for the characters, their expressions and the overall theme).  The main emphasis is on the difference in characters.  Uncle Bill has always called his nephew "Fred" - but that is NOT his name!  (Even though I have labeled him Fred in the downloadable files so things don't get too confusing).

No matter how many times the cheeky little Penguin tries to tell Uncle Bill that his name is not Fred - he is unable to get the message through to him!  Fred absolutely despises Uncle Bill and is agitated and frustrated by his Uncle's ignorance.  Fred's real name (if he needs one) could rhyme and be something like Ted, Red, Ned or Jed.  That's up to you!  You could class this as a humorous nonsense song - The music track revolves around Uncle Bill thinking his nephew is called Fred.

MUSIC:
I am a professional British Music Composer, I have a BA (Hons) Music degree and an MA in Film and Television Composition (London). I have performed for the Queen of England and written music for hundreds of international television commercials, numerous animation series and orchestrated music for game consoles. Clients and credits include: Coca Cola, Kidsco, Walt Disney, KFC, Mars, Sony, XBox and Panasonic. I currently have 2653 Youtube subscribers and over 1,504,209 video views. Please have a look at my website and Youtube channel for more information about me.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled animator, or enthusiastic student, looking for experience whilst adding invaluable content to their demo reel.  I have contacts in the film, television and audio industry - this will be great exposure; you never know who might see our work.

BUDGET:
The budget for this commission is small because it is self funded but the winner will receive full credit, exposure, use on their showreel and $80 (USD) or £50 (GBP) (or equivalent currency depending on the applicants country of residence and the exchange rate at the time of payment).

SUBMISSION DATE and RULES:
Submit animation on or before 1st April 2013. Please send a link to your submission via email. Please DO NOT send any large attachments. There are plenty of free sites that will host and store files for free (eg. Dropbox, Skydrive, YouSendIt etc.)

All animation visuals must be original material created by you and should not infringe on other publisher's content. The judging is based on originality and creativity in relation to the audio track and lyrics provided.

WINNER:
The winner will be notified and rewarded before the winning animation is uploaded on 8th April 2013 onto my Youtube Channel and shared on Facebook, Blogger, Twitter etc. with the synchronized music track.

You can have a look at some of my work on either my website or YouTube channel here:

DOWNLOAD LINK:

I'm very excited about this project and the potential it has. Let your creativity thrive!

Kind regards,

Jon

Title: "Beribu Sesalan" ('A Thousand Regrets')
Song by: Kevin Chin
Lyrics by: Tinta
Music Arrangement by: Jon Brooks
Solo Violin: Yap Yen
Label: Sony Music, Malaysia

LYRICS:
"Ku susuri malam ini
Yang tidak berbintang sunyi sepi
Juga rembulan dah menghilang
Dalam kelam ku sendiri

Ku mencari hembus bayu
Yang selalu berbisik madah rindu
Kini membisu dalam sayu
Tidak ku temu suaramu

Kekasihku di jalanan yang berliku
Di saat ku perlukanmu
Tertutup jua segalanya terhadapmu
Di sini ku tersedu-sedu

Setelah cinta pergi
Ku mengusung duka ini diiringi
Kisah janji dimungkiri lagi

Kekasihku di jalanan yang berliku
Di saat ku perlukanmu
Tertutup jua segalanya terhadapmu
Di sini ku tersedu-sedu

Setelah cinta pergi
Ku mengusung duka ini
Diiringi

Kisah janji
Dimungkiri
Dimungkiri

Sia-sia ku
Mencintaimu
Setia padamu
Percayakanmu

Sebak dadaku
Retak hatiku
Luka jiwaku
Dihiris pilu

Sia-siaku
Mencintaimu
Setia padamu
Percayakanmu

Sebak dadaku
Retak hatiku
Luka jiwaku
Dihiris pilu
Beribu sesalanku"
